I went back and forth over the purchase of the 1000HE, the 1008, waiting for the 1005, and almost bought an HP 1000. In fact, I had the HP 1000 ordered, but they ran out...I was very disappointed, but now, I'm glad.

Here's the simple question: Which is more important to you, aesthetics or functionality?

Functionality: No other mini out there has more battery life. And, you can upgrade this to 2GB (though I haven't). I seriously doubt the common user (Outlook, word, excel, multiple instances of internet explorer) will see a problem with performance, even with 1GB.

Aesthetics: Yes, others are more sleek and slim...but you're only saving around a pound. You lose battery life. And, you might be thinking, no big deal, I'll just carry my cord. Well, I get sick of wrapping and unwrapping power cords. See more below.

Pros:
Battery life, battery life, battery life. I now walk out of the house in the morning with my mini and a portfolio with a pad of paper in it for meetings, usually don't even carry a bag or brief case. Most of the time, I just turn on my mini and take notes. If you can simply remember to plug your mini in at night, much like you do your cel phone, you'll never run out of battery life (remember to set the battery usage to power saving).

Speaking of power saving: Actual working power is great. I usually have Outlook, Excel, Word, and 4-6 instances of internet explorer open and have never noticed a lack of power...or that it is slow.

Easy to use. This picks up all wireless networks incredibly fast. Keyboard is great. I am definetely glad I went with the chicklet keys.


I struggled with my decision for days...

If functionality is more important than aesthetics...(and let's be clear, this little guy isn't ugly...I've received multiple comments on how "cute" he is...I have the blue one)
If you are a normal user, not a power user...
If you want the freedom of not relying on a battery cord and therefore maybe not carrying a computer bag or brief case...

Then go with the 1000HE.

I'd like to start off by thanking those who reviewed this item before I bought it. I've owned it for about 3 months now and used it as a college student in classes. I thought the battery life was excellent! I average about 7 hours of the quoted 9.5 before I recharge, that's using wireless, disabling Bluetooth and dimming the screen.

Only difficulty I have is typing sometimes which would happen on any compact keyboard. I guess when I use the Shift key I tend to use the right side which was smaller to fit in arrow keys. So sometimes while typing I will find myself inserting text into an above line due to miskeying.

I'm not sure what issues others claimed to have with wireless N not working. On my home network with a D-Link N router I have excellent transfer speeds. The built-in microphones work great for audio conferencing while I have yet to use the web-cam. I picked this over HP and Dell models which were similar mainly due to Asus being a great PC component manufacturer and they included everything I wanted whereas similar systems I needed to customize and none had such great battery life.

1 note is the large HD is partitioned into 2 80(ish) GB partitions. I was able to use Acronis and merge the two so I have 1 whole partition. I also upgraded to 2GB RAM. I pondered long and hard before I decided to purchase this one. I researched Asus and Acer and I don't know what, before I was convinced by friends and colleagues to go with Asus. After a quick little research, I found that this one was probably the best due to battery life. So the decision was made.

It was a long agonising wait before it arrived. Of course when it arrived, I couldn't open the box quickly enough, and my cat was just as curious as I was. It came with a small cover and a cleaning cloth, which I thought was a nice touch. Fingerprints do stick to the cover, but the cleaning cloth is perfect to shine it up. The blue colour is really nice, deep blue.

It doesn't come with a lot of software, no MS office, but it does have Star Office, which is made by Sun. For most cases, it is more than adequate for home users. It can read documents written by MS office, as well as export to those formats for portability. Macros may not work though. The machine also has a few games, but other than that, no more than the standard MS packages. I got the MS version, because I needed it for my phone. However, the HD was divided into two partitions, so I have since installed Fedora 11 (Leonidas) on the second partition. This too worked out of the box, hibernation as well as wireless.

What really impressed me was the battery life. I have not managed to get it to the 9 hours promised, but I constantly get about 7 hours before I charge. That goes for both Windows and Linux.

One thing I found a bit frustrating is the resolution. There is no reason why they couldn't have made this a 1280x1050 or something like this. However, the resolution is 1024x600. It can be increased to 1024x768 with one of the soft buttons (doesn't work on F11, but it is at least 1024x600 with proper configuration. I guess I also could program the button, but haven't gotten around to it). I prefer the extended resolution, even if it means I don't get to see full screen.

Overall, I love my new netbook. It's all I need and more. It's light, small to carry around, and have long battery life. It doesn't have a cd/dvd-player, but it works excellently with an external DVD-drive. This is a great netboook for internet and word processing. I have intentionally not over loaded it with software. I installed Office 2000 which needs much less processor than Office 2007, and it does everything I need. I upgraded the memory with the Crucial 2GB stick, which has worked flawlessly (although you must reset BIOS). The upgraded memory has made a significant difference.
The screen is clear and bright.
The keyboard is stated to be over 90% of a full sized keyboard. Keyboard size has always been an issue for me on a netbook. Once you start using this netbook, you will begin to feel as though it is a full sized keyboard because it is so comfortable to use.
Most importantly, the battery truly lasts all day. This is what really takes this unit to the next level of satisfaction.

I recently bought this item. I love the color, blue, and it is a great little computer. I am in the health care field and I use it to type notes when I am traveling. Its size makes it perfect for typing in the car.

There is one problem though with the touch pad. When you use the keyboard the curser is still active and it jumps around on the document you are trying to type on. This is annoying and time consuming.

I went to my PC tech and he said that most computers have a program that shuts down the cursor while you type with several seconds time delay. But my Asus PC 1000HE did not have that program. The solution he recommended was to delete the touch pad software and install basic touchpad software that shuts the cursor with several seconds delay when you use the keyboard.

Now it is working great without a problem but I did have to pay labor charges to have it taken care of.

Also, it came with and XP support DVD. However, if you want to use it you would have to purchase an external CD ROM drive. Maybe they should have put the info on a flash drive instead.

These issues aside the ASUS is a good little PC for my purposes. They could however improve on the product to make it even better.

This is a very sleek looking laptop. With that being said though, fingerprints are noticeable and easily seen on this thing as you will read from many other reviews. With all that battery life, you do have a heavier battery though, the battery is most of the weight. The computer is still fairly light though, and definitely less weight than most regular laptops. The keyboard is also great. The only thing that might take time getting used to is the small right shift key. The touchpad works better than I expected and it has a few nice features such as zoom and two finger scrolling. With that being said, I still use a mouse whenever I can. This thing is also relatively fast and is great for the internet. It's obviously not good for games, but older games should work. I downloaded Quake and it works great on here. It is perfect on airplanes, and it fits perfectly on the tray tables.

Overall, this is a great little machine and it's worth every penny.

Been using this netbook for a couple months now and it's been great. I reinstalled it the day I got it with the Windows 7 beta then RC1 and it ran perfect. I bought this netbook for one main reason... writing at the local coffee shop in the mornings.

This works great for that. In fact, having large hands with pudgy fingers, I was a little concerned that I'd have issues typing. Nope... after just a short while my fingers are totally used to the keyboard with maybe one minor exception. Hitting the right-hand "shift" key is sometimes a problem. Other than that, great.

The touchpad IS an issue, however. In general I don't like touchpads but this one gets a little in the way. The palm of my hand often touches it and sends the cursor flying and then forcing the text cursor to pop up somewhere other then where I was originally typing. This is actually quite frustrating and unless you are one of those rare typists who hold the palms of their hands up off of the surface then you are likely to have the same issue. (why does NO ONE create a laptop with the touchpad directly in the center of the keyboard!!??)

There is a way around this, however, go into the control panel... go to the mouse controls and check off the "Disable when external USB mouse plug(ed)in" and then... USE A MOUSE! Targus has a nice little mouse with a reel-up cord... works nicely. I'd rather use a mouse anyway. In anycase, when a USB mouse is plugged in then the touchpad is disabled... problem solved.

Next issue... The screen is a 1024px X 600px screen which is not a standard resolution. Resolution settings are 800x600, 1024x600 and 1024x"768"... SEE THAT... Some apps n websites do not want to work at the 1024x600 setting. But the 1024x768 setting goes beyond the border of the monitor... this means that, for instance, if you are at the Windows' desktop then you have to push the mouse cursor down BEYOND the bottom of the screen to get to the taskbar. If you are in an application window then you have to, again, push the mouse cursor down beyond the screen bottom to get the bottom of the Windows' application window.

Not good!

BUT... they have a work-a-round for that. They have a compressed 1024x768 mode which squishes the height of the 768 pixel window into the 600 pixels of the screen.

For the most part this works but there are often situations where this is problematic. Photos are squished looking... perfect circles are no longer perfect... and some text is hard to read.

Lastly... Once I tried to use the power adaptor and it didn't work! No blue light on the power block and no "charging" info on the task bar, only a battery usage symbol. I was frantic! LATER, about an hour or so later I tried again and this time the battery started charging and the blue light on the power supply lit. I have since read other reports of this happening so it SEEMS to be an issue.

Oh yes... ONE MORE THING... ASUS has not yet responded to TWO support requests sent two weeks ago! How can they just IGNORE their tech tags like that??????

Overall the ASUS netbook has done the job that I purchased it for. It has a LONG battery life and I no longer have to find a wall plug-in for a laptop everytime I want to write or go online somewhere other than home.

I transferred the WordPerfect installation disc to a thumbdrive and installed it from there... worked great that way.
