My packaging through J&R had popped airbags so the inner PC box was slammed around a bit, but I never would have known if someone else opened it for me. Keyboard size is a bit smaller, but easy to adjust to with extended use. Screen size is more of an adjustment if you're used to large/wide screens. My only reason to rate it down is that I would like to see more resolution options from the video card. Buyers should be aware in this PC segment already though.

After reading all the good things about the Netbook, I had to get it.
First, it is lightweight and portable. Some sacrafices are made for this size. There is no DVD drive or number pad on this unit. If you need those items, go for a much larger Notebook. That being said, this Netbook is great! Yes, I did install the 2 GB of 667Mhz memory. That was one easy upgrade. Next, I wanted to see how it worked on a newer version of Windows so I installed Windows 7 on the second partition "D" drive. The 160 GB hard drive is already split in two so I figured that was perfect for my test. The best thing is, you don't need an external DVD drive to install the OS. You just download Magic Disc,
( http://www.magiciso.com/index.htm ) and it will make a virtual DVD drive for you. Then mount the iso on the virtual DVD drive and install! Very easy. I haven't tried to mount a DVD movie on there yet but I think it will work. Just need an 8GB Flash drive to transfer it.
Anyway, I love the keyboard and controls. Not worried about fingerprints on the outside. This Netbook is a "Take anywhere you go" unit that is very fast and portable. Well worth every dollar. Runs Windows XP and Windows 7 RC like a charm with no problems. One thing to do is if you run it without an ac adaptor, the backlight will go down and make it hard to see. Just press fn plus F6 and it will lighten up as you wish. I highly recomend this unit.

It is almost as fast as my larger Lenovo T42 laptop, but has even more hard drive memory. I like the feel of the larger ergonomic chiclet keyboard and the right shift key is in the correct place for typing. The mouse pad location causes the mouse pointer to jump around when I rest my wrists on the edge of the keyboard, so I try to either not do that or disable the mouse pad and use a USB mouse instead. The long battery life is for real!!!! This netbook travels everywhere with me as it is my primary tool for internet communication. It fits very nicely in a shoulder bag that measures 9 inches tall, 13 inches long, and 5 inches thick (9x13x5). In this bag I also carry the power cord and the USB mouse. As I said, it is a shoulder bag that is very easy (and light) to carry and it also fits into my motorcycle saddle bags. Although the blue Eee PC shows fingerprints, I love the color. I have no problems picking up network connections wherever I go. Compared to the other computers/laptops I use in my life, this one is slower to connect to and surf the internet with. Bought one of these for the wife for her bday. We currently have a slew of computers in the house, so generally the addition of a new one is not really that exciting.

However, the fact that this thing costs $350 (AR), has a beautiful, sleek design, is small AND powerful enough to do what 95% of us use computers for, is simply outstanding.

I have a very expensive Dell XPS laptop (M1330) and I honestly would probably be happier with the Asus which costs a fraction of what the Dell did.

One thing that this little netbook excels at is acting as a DVD player for my kids when travelling. I ripped some of their movies and DVDs, downloaded VLC media player, and on the plane when one of the kids couldn't sleep, they were able to easily watch some Backyardigans (here again, small form factor and long batt life was much appreciated) Handles ripped mpeg superbly, and a host of other formats.

PROS: Price. Form factor (small!). Style. Ease of use (all kinds of extras and goodies that make things easier). Price. Memory is expandable (don't make the mistake I did and get the 1 GB upgrade chip...you need to buy a 2 GB chip since you have to pull the original chip and replace, not add to). Did I mention price? Battery life is almost unbelievable. Multitouch touchpad!

I had been using a Dell Inspiron 13" as my "portable" PC, but it was still too heavy and bulky to really travel with easily. I started with an eeePC 701, and the 1000he is an incredible improvement. The processor is hyperthreaded, so you get two virtual cores, and the stock clock seems fast enough. The technically capable will be able to overclock (mine goes to 1.9ghz stable). Keyboard is spaced out and great to type on. Even though the keyboard is a huge improvement on previous netbooks, you will still need agile fingers to keep full typing speed. Screen is good and easy to read even at half brightness. The integrated video card is decent enough to play games like Unreal Tournament, Tribes2, Half-Life 2.

Be sure to buy a 2GB stick of RAM. This is a necessary purchase, and an extremely easy install. Not only will everything be much faster, but with the newest BIOS firmware the Intel integrated graphics can make use of this extra memory (since the video card operates on shared memory).

Mine is currently running Windows 7, which runs even better than the stock XP install. I am dual booting with Ubuntu, which detects the wireless card without hassle.

In my opinion, this is as close to perfect as the current gen netbooks are going to get. The only things I would change about it would be a beefier video card and a slightly larger screen (for at least 768 vertical resolution). The ASUS EEE PC 1000HE is easily one of the best purchases I have made in years.

I started a bit skeptical about the whole "netbook" fad, but I have converted to a junky. As someone who brings a computer back and fourth to work, on trips, and around the house every day...this computer fits all my needs. I do have a full sized laptop (17"), but I find myself only using it to play World of Warcraft. For everything else, I use my netbook.

Presentations have been an absolute breeze, I give about 2-5 powerpoint presentations a week, and this thing has been absolutely top-notch. I can go to a long meeting, take notes, and then give a powerpoint without ever worrying about my battery life. This is a big change from my full sized. I was constantly worried about the battery dying in the middle of a presentation, not anymore.

People talk about how this machine is underpowered. I just don't see it, of course I upgraded to 2gig of RAM before I even turned the machine on. However, this machine does everything you would want to do in day-to-day computing. I run Microsoft Office 2007, Google Sketchup 7 (usually dock this thing to a monitor, but have done drawings on the 10" display), GIMP, and Skype.... Everything seems to run perfectly fine.

Honestly, if it wasnt for video games, this would be the only computer that I need. Also, I am typing this review on my EEE PC and the keyboard is more than good enough to touch type on. In fact, I prefer it to my normal laptop now!!

I have now had my netbook for a month. It has been everything promised and expected. I use it for traveling and meetings where a full laptop is not needed. It came with only a few embedded programs so the 160G drive was mostly empty even with MS Office Home loaded. I added the extra memory before I used it so I'm not sure I received any real benefit but assume so. I have not pushed the limit of the battery yet, but estimate even with Bluetooth and WiFi in use I will get at least 7 hours.
The keypad is not too small for me and I have not had any problems with the right shift key as other reviewers have complained about.
If you will be using the 1000HE for more than a few minutes, I suggest getting a Bluetooth mouse. It makes the experience much more enjoyable than the cramped touchpad.
The only complaint I have is the glossy finish. It attracts finger prints very quickly. If you are someone who likes the cleaner look, this may drive you crazy constantly wiping it down. To me this is minor.

I've been using the netbook for about 2 months now, including two weeks traveling on vacation. I'm pleased with its performance. It's lightweight and reliable. I'd upgraded the RAM to 2GB and have had no difficulty multi-tasking and editing large photo images.

I have not purchased an external CD/DVD drive so I'm limited to "cloud computing" and downloading online software. I'd prefer to use Norton Internet Security or some other full-featured protection but avast! seems to be doing the job for now.

When I first got it in June 2009, I relies that it required quite abit of firmware update from Asus support web side.

Also, Asus support web site do not automatic scan your system to let you know which update you need. Which is kinda painful.

So far I have had this ASUS eee PC 1000HE for a few days, and I have to say it is exactly what I expected. Light, vesatile, easy to use, and good quality. I bought this netbook primarily due to its rated 9.5 hour battery life. I have yet to run the battery down that far, and I prefer to run the computer on the battery saver mode anyway because it strains the eyes less(not as bright). Meets my expectations.

I connected the eeePC to a wireless network with my desktop PC. I installed some programs by mapping drives. The eeePC doesn't have optical drives, so this can be a handy feature if you also have a desktop at home. The GPS mapping program I installed seemed to run well, with little noticeable slowdown. I don't really see the need to install the extra 1GB memory at this point, the stock computer seems sufficient for my needs.

Fingerprints are noticeable on the computer, but who cares. You shouldn't be buying a computer for looks. Besides, it comes with a handy cloth for safely wiping off any fingerprints and smudges.

And the weight. Not too bad at 3.2 pounds. It feels pretty durable and I like that. Also, the external battery is a big plus compared to some internal battery models. This way, if the battery dies you can switch it out without sending the whole computer back. I've been happy so far and I think that this little package offers a lot for its price.

After reading many online reviews, I decided that I needed a netbook and ordered this one. I've had this product for a little over two weeks now and don't know how I lived without it. I have a desktop PC (HP) at home and a Toshiba Portege laptop for work. Bought this mainly for email/internet browsing outside of my home office and possibly for travel. It has worked like a charm. Very easy to set up. I opted to get the 2GB memory upgrade. Also very easy to set up and install.

Pros:
1. Very long battery life. Most of the time I run it on battery. It only takes about 1 1/2 hours to get a full charge. I was used to having very poor battery life from my Toshiba. What a refreshing change.

2. Screen size is about right. I wear reading glasses but don't need them to see the screen. Not quite as large as a laptop but easy to see, nice resolution, etc.

3. This isn't loaded with a lot of junk software like most new PCs and laptops.

4. Good value - price is reasonable and the memory upgrade was only another $20.

Cons:
1. This is only a small "con". The small keyboard takes some getting used to. That said, after a week or so, I have gotten used to it. The track pad or whatever you call the pad that replaces the mouse also is much more sensitive than the one on my laptop. I've grown to like this one more.

2. This is an Amazon problem, not Asus', but Amazon needs to package these better when they are shipped. No bubble wrap and the cardboard box from Amazon is only slightly larger than that of the manufacturer. I've sent Amazon some feedback on this issue and I've noticed other reviewers have done so as well.

I've been told that if you close unsed windows as you surf the net,
you'll increase the battery life. Also decrease the brightness of your
screen.
3. BOOT UP: 5-8 Seconds
4. KEY BOARD: Keys have a little space between them, this makes the keyboard easier
to use. It has the feel of a full sized keyboard.
5. DISPLAYS: full web page for all applications, even games I've used so far
(unlike the Aspire)TIP: F11 will max screen viewing area.
6. FAN:Can't hear it most of the time.
7. WEIGHT: It weighs just over three pounds but it is still small enough to lift
