I bought this in Feb this year and have been using it quite a lot. I also subscribed a Verizon ExpressCard to make it completely portable. Asus also provides good services. My HD corrputed once and shipped it back to them. The turnaround was quick.

If I try to be picky, here are the things I think they can improve for future models:
1. The keyboard. Compared to Acer, 1000HE's keyboard is not smooth and soft.
2. The touchpad. Again, I think Acer's is a better design.
3. The HD. It is partitioned into two logical drives but does not allow you to merge them together. If you try to do that by using PartitionMagic, be careful not to crach it.

I had a chance to work with one of these units a few months back, and was impressed enough to purchase one myself; I've been putting it through its paces for about a month now. I went back and forth over the purchase of the 1000HE, the 1008, waiting for the 1005, and almost bought an HP 1000. In fact, I had the HP 1000 ordered, but they ran out...I was very disappointed, but now, I'm glad.

Here's the simple question: Which is more important to you, aesthetics or functionality?

Functionality: No other mini out there has more battery life. And, you can upgrade this to 2GB (though I haven't). I seriously doubt the common user (Outlook, word, excel, multiple instances of internet explorer) will see a problem with performance, even with 1GB.

Aesthetics: Yes, others are more sleek and slim...but you're only saving around a pound. You lose battery life. And, you might be thinking, no big deal, I'll just carry my cord. Well, I get sick of wrapping and unwrapping power cords. See more below.

Pros:
Battery life, battery life, battery life. I now walk out of the house in the morning with my mini and a portfolio with a pad of paper in it for meetings, usually don't even carry a bag or brief case. Most of the time, I just turn on my mini and take notes. If you can simply remember to plug your mini in at night, much like you do your cel phone, you'll never run out of battery life (remember to set the battery usage to power saving).

Speaking of power saving: Actual working power is great. I usually have Outlook, Excel, Word, and 4-6 instances of internet explorer open and have never noticed a lack of power...or that it is slow.

Easy to use. This picks up all wireless networks incredibly fast. Keyboard is great. I am definetely glad I went with the chicklet keys.


I struggled with my decision for days...

If functionality is more important than aesthetics...(and let's be clear, this little guy isn't ugly...I've received multiple comments on how "cute" he is...I have the blue one)
If you are a normal user, not a power user...
If you want the freedom of not relying on a battery cord and therefore maybe not carrying a computer bag or brief case...

I'd like to start off by thanking those who reviewed this item before I bought it. I've owned it for about 3 months now and used it as a college student in classes. I thought the battery life was excellent! I average about 7 hours of the quoted 9.5 before I recharge, that's using wireless, disabling Bluetooth and dimming the screen.

Only difficulty I have is typing sometimes which would happen on any compact keyboard. I guess when I use the Shift key I tend to use the right side which was smaller to fit in arrow keys. So sometimes while typing I will find myself inserting text into an above line due to miskeying.

I'm not sure what issues others claimed to have with wireless N not working. On my home network with a D-Link N router I have excellent transfer speeds. The built-in microphones work great for audio conferencing while I have yet to use the web-cam. I picked this over HP and Dell models which were similar mainly due to Asus being a great PC component manufacturer and they included everything I wanted whereas similar systems I needed to customize and none had such great battery life.

1 note is the large HD is partitioned into 2 80(ish) GB partitions. I was able to use Acronis and merge the two so I have 1 whole partition. I also upgraded to 2GB RAM. I pondered long and hard before I decided to purchase this one. I researched Asus and Acer and I don't know what, before I was convinced by friends and colleagues to go with Asus. After a quick little research, I found that this one was probably the best due to battery life. So the decision was made.

It was a long agonising wait before it arrived. Of course when it arrived, I couldn't open the box quickly enough, and my cat was just as curious as I was. It came with a small cover and a cleaning cloth, which I thought was a nice touch. Fingerprints do stick to the cover, but the cleaning cloth is perfect to shine it up. The blue colour is really nice, deep blue.

It doesn't come with a lot of software, no MS office, but it does have Star Office, which is made by Sun. For most cases, it is more than adequate for home users. It can read documents written by MS office, as well as export to those formats for portability. Macros may not work though. The machine also has a few games, but other than that, no more than the standard MS packages. I got the MS version, because I needed it for my phone. However, the HD was divided into two partitions, so I have since installed Fedora 11 (Leonidas) on the second partition. This too worked out of the box, hibernation as well as wireless.

What really impressed me was the battery life. I have not managed to get it to the 9 hours promised, but I constantly get about 7 hours before I charge. That goes for both Windows and Linux.

One thing I found a bit frustrating is the resolution. There is no reason why they couldn't have made this a 1280x1050 or something like this. However, the resolution is 1024x600. It can be increased to 1024x768 with one of the soft buttons (doesn't work on F11, but it is at least 1024x600 with proper configuration. I guess I also could program the button, but haven't gotten around to it). I prefer the extended resolution, even if it means I don't get to see full screen.

Overall, I love my new netbook. It's all I need and more. It's light, small to carry around, and have long battery life. It doesn't have a cd/dvd-player, but it works excellently with an external DVD-drive. I installed Office 2000 which needs much less processor than Office 2007, and it does everything I need. I recently bought this item. I love the color, blue, and it is a great little computer. I am in the health care field and I use it to type notes when I am traveling. Its size makes it perfect for typing in the car.

There is one problem though with the touch pad. When you use the keyboard the curser is still active and it jumps around on the document you are trying to type on. This is annoying and time consuming.

I went to my PC tech and he said that most computers have a program that shuts down the cursor while you type with several seconds time delay. But my Asus PC 1000HE did not have that program. The solution he recommended was to delete the touch pad software and install basic touchpad software that shuts the cursor with several seconds delay when you use the keyboard.

Now it is working great without a problem but I did have to pay labor charges to have it taken care of.

Also, it came with and XP support DVD. However, if you want to use it you would have to purchase an external CD ROM drive. Maybe they should have put the info on a flash drive instead.

These issues aside the ASUS is a good little PC for my purposes. They could however improve on the product to make it even better.

The touchpad works better than I expected and it has a few nice features such as zoom and two finger scrolling. With that being said, I still use a mouse whenever I can. This thing is also relatively fast and is great for the internet. It's obviously not good for games, but older games should work. I downloaded Quake and it works great on here. It is perfect on airplanes, and it fits perfectly on the tray tables.

I bought this netbook for one main reason... writing at the local coffee shop in the mornings.

This works great for that. In fact, having large hands with pudgy fingers, I was a little concerned that I'd have issues typing. Nope... after just a short while my fingers are totally used to the keyboard with maybe one minor exception. Hitting the right-hand "shift" key is sometimes a problem. Other than that, great.

The touchpad IS an issue, however. In general I don't like touchpads but this one gets a little in the way. The palm of my hand often touches it and sends the cursor flying and then forcing the text cursor to pop up somewhere other then where I was originally typing. This is actually quite frustrating and unless you are one of those rare typists who hold the palms of their hands up off of the surface then you are likely to have the same issue. (why does NO ONE create a laptop with the touchpad directly in the center of the keyboard!!??)

There is a way around this, however, go into the control panel... go to the mouse controls and check off the "Disable when external USB mouse plug(ed)in" and then... USE A MOUSE! Targus has a nice little mouse with a reel-up cord... works nicely. I'd rather use a mouse anyway. In anycase, when a USB mouse is plugged in then the touchpad is disabled... problem solved.

Next issue... The screen is a 1024px X 600px screen which is not a standard resolution. Resolution settings are 800x600, 1024x600 and 1024x"768"... SEE THAT... Some apps n websites do not want to work at the 1024x600 setting. But the 1024x768 setting goes beyond the border of the monitor... this means that, for instance, if you are at the Windows' desktop then you have to push the mouse cursor down BEYOND the bottom of the screen to get to the taskbar. If you are in an application window then you have to, again, push the mouse cursor down beyond the screen bottom to get the bottom of the Windows' application window.

Not good!

BUT... they have a work-a-round for that. They have a compressed 1024x768 mode which squishes the height of the 768 pixel window into the 600 pixels of the screen.

For the most part this works but there are often situations where this is problematic. Photos are squished looking... perfect circles are no longer perfect... and some text is hard to read.

Lastly... Once I tried to use the power adaptor and it didn't work! No blue light on the power block and no "charging" info on the task bar, only a battery usage symbol. I was frantic! LATER, about an hour or so later I tried again and this time the battery started charging and the blue light on the power supply lit. I have since read other reports of this happening so it SEEMS to be an issue.

Oh yes... ONE MORE THING... ASUS has not yet responded to TWO support requests sent two weeks ago! How can they just IGNORE their tech tags like that??????

Overall the ASUS netbook has done the job that I purchased it for. It has a LONG battery life and I no longer have to find a wall plug-in for a laptop everytime I want to write or go online somewhere other than home.

I transferred the WordPerfect installation disc to a thumbdrive and installed it from there... worked great that way.

Living in NYC, we tend to walk a lot. My boyfriend is constantly on the go, making it difficult to work on the book he is writing and to stay connected with others online. He needed a laptop that would travel well: lightweight, fully functioning, with an extended battery life. The Asus EEE PC definitely fits the bill, with an impressively affordable price tag!

Having large hands, I worried that its smaller keyboard might make it difficult for him to type. Not so, as he says he adapted very quickly. As others have mentioned, he does occasionally have trouble with the "jumping cursor" by hitting the touchpad, but not to the degree that it's a serious issue.

The 9+ hour battery life is true to promise; in the 4 months he's owned it, it has yet to fail. He hasn't had any problems with the AC adapter, as a few reviewers seem to have.

The one complaint is with Linux: although admittedly he didn't spend hours on end attempting to install it, he did follow his usual protocol of switching over from the standard Windows OS, but after hitting a few walls he decided just to reinstall XP.

Overall, although it hasn't totally replaced his other laptop, for everyday/on-the-go use, he is very pleased. So much so that it will probably be my next purchase when my laptop dies!

I bought this unit because my 1005HA I ordered just before it had a bad ac unit. Thiss netbook presented me with a whole new set of problems which of course the typical tech support you get was of no help. I bought this unit thinking it would be nice to use around the house as ot would be light and portable. I was hoping I would be able to stream my itunes with it. I guess I was wrong it. It intially worked great then a few days later it stopped streaming the music. After stripping it of any firewall and antivirus features it still wouldn't work. I spent countless hours on the netbook adjusting power settings, turning up the power, adjusting the wireless adpater so it was set for constant use, you get the idea. Somewhere during the process I found it would work however if it was plugged into the ac adapater. This was annoying but was working. A week later plugging it into the ac unit no longer allowed me to stream music either. sometines it would work for a few songs then it would start to skip terribly and it seems the processor or the wireless adapter were over sressing themselves or overclocking. I could not believe it would not handle this simple program when my 5yr old HP laptop with a with slower processor and slower wireless setting worked just fine. I hate to rant on and on but to be short it just is not up to the task of everyday use. I bought this to take to class, something small, unobtrusive, and very portable. It's lived up to my expectations and then some.

Pros: It's small, light weight, and runs forever on it's battery. One of the best things about this machine is that I never have to turn it off. I can just close the lid, stash it away in my backpack and head off to my next class. When I get to the next class, all I have to do is open up the netbook and it's still on ready to go. It does everything I need it to do, and then some. I will mention that I did add another gig of ram to the machine, which did help speed it up some.

Cons: I wish it actually came with the 2 gigs installed? Everyone keeps stealing it from me? I'm not getting any kickbacks for all the ones I've helped sell to other people? I decided to purchase the ASUS Eee pc 100HE because of all the positive ratings it received.
It does not come with anti virus software. I succesfully connected to the internet, registered the product, and purchased online software. Before I had a chance to download the antivirus software, the computer started beeping and then crashed.
I rebooted only to receive the notice that Windows/system/32/config (or something like that) was either missing or corrupt. It asks you to put in the original disk to reinstall it.
Well, the pc does not come with a drive to put in a disk.

We bought this to take on a 4 week road trip. It met our expectations on portability and ease of use. For our purposes (music, recorded books and picture downloads) the capacity was plenty. I purchased one of these Asus PC1000HE Netbooks two months ago for two of my grandsons. I also purchased a 2GB memory upgrade from Micron Technology, their Crucial line of memory chips. I have now been using Eee PC 1000HE for 3 months now and it is a great computer! I've been using the 1000he for a couple of weeks now. Frankly, it's my most favorite of all computers I've owned since beginning in the '80s. It's small (but not too small) and easy to carry. Battery life is close to what they claim (I'm still playing with that but, so far, very satisfied). It's the first computer I've had that will really go out with me for the day and still have battery left when I return. The keys are just a little tight together (first thought) but I have now become accustomed to the size. I purchased the additional 2gb of memory (about $25) and popped it in before I fired it up for the first time. I'm not sure how fast it would have been with the factory installed 1gb but, for 25 bucks, 2 gb is a no brainer.

I did look at several other netbooks. By far... this is the best one currently available, in my opinion. Best $415 I ever spent.

Purchased Eee PC 12-April-09. Also purchased Asus CD Burner, 2GB RAM, wireless mouse and travel bag. When all was said and done,I spent over $500.00. For a couple of months the Eee PC was wonderful, then the battery wouldn't charge. I called Asus and received an RMA number, removed all my data from the unit and carefully repackaged the unit for shippment in it's original box with the original packing material. I took the unit to my local UPS store and paid to have the unit double boxed for safety, an additional $25.00. Within a week my Eee PC was returned to me via Fedex, NO double box. My Eee PC original box was covered in tape and shipping labels, which was a little dissapointing. Ok, I was willing to forget about my tattered box as long as the unit was returned in a functional condition.
Upon opening the box, I found that the scratch protection bag I had shipped it in was not on the machine, and to make matters worse, the machine still did not work. They had fixed the battery charging problem, however, now the machine will not boot into Windows. So, once again I called Asus service, spending the better part of an hour trying to fix the problem over the phone, to no avail. Now they want me to ship the unit back to them again for another crack at trying to repair it. They also told me I would have to pay for shipping (once again) to their repair depot. So I asked the Asus agent if it was ok to return in just the bare Asus box, and she said as long as the unit is not damaged. Oh, I didn't mention the small scratches on my machine from their neglectful shipping method. Yes, I am not a very happy Asus customer at this time, and am probably out of more than $500.00. I am sorta geeky - but this is NOT a 'geek' review - as I am only a 'user' of this fine netbook.

I bought the extra ram, but after 90 odd days, I have yet to bother to install it! I simply have not seen a need - go figure!

I am a gamer, but not on the netbook. I have custom built more than a few 'gamer rigs' and the *old* one I still use is a 2.4gz, 2 gig of DDR ram, a 512 meg nVidia video card, and more... The point of talking about what I use in the house is for a comparison when I say that email, web browsing, Word, Excel, and so on with the Netbook feels just as fast as if I was doing it at home!

The screen is great and bright - no dead spots

I love the keyboard! Not like, but LOVE it!

I do not care that it has no DVD or CD-ROM built in - if going over my network (wireless) at home or work is not good enough, I can always buy a DVD-ROM here on Amazon to use as needed.

The price was wonderful, and there is nothing that I would change.

I really do get 9+ hrs on a single battery charge! If you focus on turning off the Bluetooth (I do not use it) or the Camera (when not in use) and you set the power-savings features to the normal laptop type settings, I can take it to work on a long day, leave it on all day (am not using it every minute though) and still have an hour or 2 when I go home 10hrs later! My Boss's laptop is lucky to go 2hrs period! He saw it, liked it, and bought one - just because of the battery!

I bought this in Feb this year and have been using it quite a lot. I also subscribed a Verizon ExpressCard to make it completely portable. Asus also provides good services. My HD corrputed once and shipped it back to them. The turnaround was quick.

If I try to be picky, here are the things I think they can improve for future models:
1. The keyboard. Compared to Acer, 1000HE's keyboard is not smooth and soft.
2. The touchpad. Again, I think Acer's is a better design.
3. The HD. It is partitioned into two logical drives but does not allow you to merge them together. If you try to do that by using PartitionMagic, be careful not to crach it.
